As I sit typing this now, the Winter Hag, the Cailleach, screeches through Chicago with a cold so intense one could get frostbite in mere minutes of being outside. The city has become a tundra for the last few days with a cold so sharp it takes your breath away. And when I go outside I can't help but notice how the season so perfectly parallels a certain phase of the ascension path. A phase that also comes in cycles and can be incredibly harsh and seemingly unforgiving.
Of course as the title suggests, I'm referring to those times in life when one feels as if everything is falling apart. Be it job, relationship, home-life, friends or a combination of all these areas of life, you just can't seem to fix it or make it work or be happy in it. There are two types of ways this can happen, but they both really mean the same thing in the long run.
First, it could be that you've been miserable in one of these areas for a long time. You keep getting nudges from the universe that maybe it's time to move on but you just keep ignoring those intuitive nudges because leaving that job, relationship, etc is too difficult or maybe, too scary. Then suddenly, the universe steps in and says, "You're done with this- I'm removing it for you." When this happens it can be incredibly shocking to the system- even if some part of you knew it was coming. I said those nudges were coming from the universe but really what I meant was that they come from your Higher Self, the you that knows why you came here, and the more you listen to your intuition the faster you can get on track and stay there. Now I'm not telling anyone to go quit their job or move on a whim, but at the least my advice to someone getting these nudges is to start taking steps to change your situation by following your intuition. Then you'll be able to work in harmony with the universe and flow, instead of getting hurt badly in a state of resistance.
Second, remember I said there are two ways I've seen this "life-unraveling" scenario happen? Sometimes it happens seemingly out of the blue. Those times can be almost more devastating. We feel like we're doing everything "right" and actually getting ahead in life and then wham! It just falls apart one day, or maybe over a few days or weeks. I'm here to tell you why and how regardless of how your life might fall apart it's a beautiful thing.
Beautiful?! Yes. When everything gets taken away from us, it's the universe saying an old cycle has ended, and a new one is about to begin. We have completed a chapter and are ready to take the next step. We have learned our lessons, grown and expanded our consciousness. We should be proud of ourselves, but most people get angry or depressed. It's easy to slip into lower vibratory patterns when it feels as if our very Root chakras are under attack. Every lesson in life comes in spirals, and you can go up or down those spirals depending on your vibration. But that's why I'm telling you this now. Because this has happened to me more than a few times in my life, and when I realized that things always get better after they seem really bad, it helped me maintain a higher positive vibration to carry me up the spiral to the next loop.
And one last thing, sometimes we think we've learned something and handled the ending of a cycle well and then one more little jolt from the universe might come in just like that last roar of winter. If that happens, again realize you are being tested to see if you really understand and have grounded your lessons in trust in your Self and the universe, and with that knowledge you'll find that little jolt of a lesson clears up pretty fast. So don't let life get you down and focus on flowing with the natural breaths of life. Be gentle on yourself, be proud of all you've achieved, and begin the next cycle on a high note. Even if you're experiencing the dead of winter in your life right now remember, The Cailleach can be scary, but it is She who prepares us for the rebirth of Spring. Blessings on your journey.
One of the most fundamental principles of spiritual growth and therefore, using magick successfully is "Know Thyself". Anyone who's sought out spiritual groups far and wide will have come across this ancient phrase at least a few times. But what does it mean to actually know yourself?
We can look at this in a few different ways to understand better. For starters, it means know your personal qualities as well as flaws. Know your responses to various situations. Know your Shadow. If we know what we are good at, we know where we can be successful. If we know what we need improvement on, we also know how to better succeed. If we know how we are prone to responding in difficult or stressful situations, we know how to stop ourselves from spiraling downward. For example, when I was younger I was in constant battle with my depression. It seemed no matter what I tried I couldn't cease the constant misery that seemed to follow me daily. My depression spiral could be triggered by any small thing in my life and I had been conditioned in childhood (unknowingly by both parents) to then begin excavating every terrible, sad, miserable thing in my reality that was not where I thought it should be and start judging it and myself. We are our own worst critics. But we need to be aware that our thoughts feed our emotions, and our emotions feed our manifestations.
That downward spiral is exactly what we want to avoid when it comes to manifesting our reality. We are powerful creator beings and when we allow our positive vibrations to be knocked off course and are not self-aware enough to come back to Center as quickly as possible, we risk losing all of our hard work with the Law of Attraction. We are what we create. Try this for a minute; get a piece of paper and write down some areas of your life you are unhappy with currently, and then ask yourself, "What stories do I tell myself about this every day?" Now do the same with things you love about your life. Do you see? In order to heal my depression I had to face it, and ask myself honestly if I wanted to stay there and wallow in self-pity or put on my big girl pants and find a way to allow more happiness into my life by changing my story. These days I know when I start feeling those old thought patterns come back around to try to lower my vibe again, I recognize them and I can choose to climb the spiral instead of falling back down it.
Which brings me to the second half of this principle as I see it. We are all fragments of the Divine, complete in ourselves yet still a part of the greater whole. The power in self-awareness lies in truly understanding who and what we actually are. We are Source, Spirit, God, whatever you choose to call it- we are It and It is us. It is our responsibility as divine beings to know ourselves on the deepest levels, not only to better our own lives but because we are all connected. We are all One. We are already powerful manifestors, that's the easy part- bringing something into reality. The challenge is to learn to control what we bring into our reality. This is how the new Golden Age begins. The more we become aware of not just our individual but collective power to change reality, the more we can and will change the world- one person at a time.
